In the fifties and sixties in the US I grew up believing that any phone conversation I had might well have been monitored by "my" National Security Agency or the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Hacking is nothing new, and industrial espionage apart (which was notorious even though it was never my problem), my government led the way.
